based in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

I provide the highest quality instruction delivered by friendly, enthusiastic, qualified instructors.

I work with very small groups (max 4 people per instructor), allowing for personal attention and effective training.
You can come by yourself, with friends, or join a group.

I have a range of navigation courses to suit adults of all ages and abilities, from total novice to aspirant instructor.
I offer...

Although I offer scheduled courses, I also run my courses at other times by request,
so please contact me to discuss what you would like to do.
I am here to help you enjoy the outdoors with confidence.

I also sell a range of books and navigation aids via my online shop.

I hope to have the opportunity to welcome you to this fabulous area soon!

A little background...

I have been running navigation and hill-skills courses in the Welsh mountains since 1978, based from Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons. It is really easy to get here: London is less than 3 hours away; Birmingham just over 90 minutes. Indeed, I am only 10 minutes away from a major dual-carriageway link to both the M4 and M5 corridors. Despite this, the area is surprisingly quiet, and many first-time visitors are amazed by the wealth of wilderness.

I offer friendly professionalism, effective training, and individual attention made possible by exceptionally small groups. On scheduled courses I never work with more than 4 clients, often less. I also offer personal tuition throughout Wales, not just in navigation techniques, but in a whole host of other hill skills as well.

By way of general background, I am an experienced mountain addict, and  have walked and climbed all over Britain and Europe as well as in more far flung places such as the Himalaya, Australia and New Zealand. I have a vast experience of tramping the Welsh hills, and an undying passion for discovering the history, heritage, and hidden gems of this most scenic of countries. I ran Mountain Leader training courses for several years, have appeared on television and radio, and have written several hill skills books, the two most recent being Mountain & Moorland Navigation and Nature of the Brecon Beacons, both published by Pesda Press Books and available from my online shop. I also run a small guidebook publishing company called Heritage Guides, and have written a fair amount in the outdoor press, particularly for TGO magazine.

Visiting the hills and mountains with me is never mere trudging. Wherever we go, I will bring the landscape to life with stories and reminiscences that will make you look at your surroundings in a new light.

Although I lead most courses myself, I also use the services of a small team of friendly associate instructors. You will find their enthusiasm infectious! Needless to say, all possess the relevant qualifications and experience.

Whether you are one of my many regular clients or are considering joining me for the first time, you will find something to whet your appetite and increase your confidence...

  • You can learn the art of mountain and moorland navigation, hone existing skills and develop some new ones.

  • You can either come on a scheduled course, or opt for personal tuition or 1:1 coaching.

If, having browsed this website, you have any queries, please feel free to get in touch. If you contact me by telephone and find I am already on the hill, just leave your name and number, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Alternatively, you can leave your contact details here.
