Who I am and what I do...

I have been running navigation and hill-skills courses in the Welsh mountains since 1978. My main base is in Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons. London is less than 3 hours away, Birmingham just over 90 minutes. Indeed, I am only 10 minutes away from a major dual-carriageway link to both the M4 and M5 corridors, so it is really easy to get here. Despite this, the area is surprisingly quiet, and many first-time visitors are amazed by the wealth of wilderness.

I offer friendly professionalism, quality training, and individual attention made possible by exceptionally small groups. On scheduled courses I never work with more than 4 clients, often less. I also offer personal tuition and private guiding throughout Wales, not just in navigation techniques, but in a whole host of other hill skills as well.

By way of general background, I am a highly experienced mountain addict, and have walked and climbed in many far flung places, including the Himalayas, Australia and New Zealand. I have a vast experience of tramping the Welsh hills, and an undying passion for discovering the history, heritage, and hidden gems of this most scenic of countries. I ran Mountain Leader training courses for several years, have appeared on television and radio, and have written a number of hill skills books, the latest being Mountain & Moorland Navigation. I also write guides books, my most recent being Undiscovered Wales, described by one reviewer as "a walking guide with attitude"! I also run a small publishing company called Heritage Guides, and I often write for the outdoor press, particularly TGO magazine.

Walking with me is never mere trudging! Whatever route we take, I will bring the landscape to life with stories and reminiscences that will make you look at your surroundings in a new light.

Although I lead most courses myself, I also use the services of a small team of friendly, professional associate instructors. You will find their enthusiasm infectious! Needless to say, all possess the relevant qualifications.

Whether you are one of my many regular clients or are considering joining me for the first time, you will find something to whet your appetite!...

  • You can come hill walking and mountaineering with enthusiastic people who really know the mountains of Wales;
  • You can learn the art of mountain and moorland navigation, hone existing skills and develop some new ones;
  • You can opt for personal tuition or 1:1 coaching, and if you are feeling particularly curious about pushing the vertical limits, you can even try your hand at scrambling and rock climbing.
