A Big Adventure...

Oct 05, 2016

On 1st December I'm off on a big, three-month-long adventure! I am going Down Under - spending a month in Australia, then a month in New Zealand's North Island, then a month in New Zealand's South Island (including a visit to Steward Island - the most southerly point). Some things are booked because of the distances involved - some of which are mad (some internal flights across Australia are longer than long-haul flights across Europe!) - but for much of the time the plan is to wander at will and explore.

There are, of course, certain highlights. For example, in Australia we plan to drive the Great Ocean Road, visit the Red Centre and trek around Uluru and King's Canyon, spend what I am sure will feel like a bizarrely hot and humid Christmas in the tropical rainforest around Port Douglas, and see in the New Year in Sydney. In New Zealand North Island we plan to visit to Cape Reinga (the most northerly point), do the tourist thing by looking around Hobbiton (as an ardent Tolkien fan I just couldn't resist it!), explore the amazingf coastline of the Coromandel Peninsular, and walk the Tongariro Crossing (reputed to be one of the best one-day walks in the world). In New Zealand South Island, we plan to visit Stewart Island (the most southerly point), explore the Southern Alps from the Hermitage at Mount Cook, cruise on Doubtful Sound, and be awed by the Trans-Alpine railway between Greymouth and Christchurch.

I will be blogging as we go, and whenever possible will be uploading a selection of photos to my Facebook page. I'll also be putting together at least one audio-visual show when we get back!
